Individual Therapy with Adults & Adolescents:
Beginning individual therapy can be a difficult decision. For people who have never been in treatment, it can be especially daunting to think about discussing personal issues with someone you do not know. I strive to make my clients feel comfortable and trust me from the first session. I offer individual therapy sessions for adults and adolescents age 14 and older. Sessions are typically held weekly and therapy can be short or long term, depending on the issues with which you are struggling. When working with minors, I am happy to include parents in the initial session, but typically meet with adolescents on their own.
Trauma Therapy:
Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a specific trauma therapy that helps people learn to modify and challenge unhelpful beliefs related to a trauma. It is thought that these beliefs are what keep people "stuck" in their trauma symptoms, and by learning to change these beliefs, one can become "unstuck," create a new understanding of the trauma, and in doing so decrease its negative effect on one's life and reduce anxiety. Treatment is approximately 12 weeks, and a comprehensive intake is completed prior to starting CPT in order to assess PTSD symptoms and whether CPT is the right fit for treatment.
Exposure & Response Prevention:
Exposure & Response Prevention (ERP) is one of the most evidence-based treatments for obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD). For a person with OCD, obsessions cause increased anxiety, and compulsions are what you do to avoid and therefore decrease the anxiety. In ERP, with your therapist by your side, you gradually expose yourself to the things that make you anxious, and prevent engaging in the compulsions that allow you to avoid feeling the anxiety. The thought of this type of treatment can be anxiety provoking itself - your therapist will be asking you to sit with anxiety, which is not a pleasant experience for anyone. However, if you commit to the treatment, you will see over time that the long-term effects of sitting with anxiety and avoiding the compulsions are a decrease in anxiety, a decrease in the need to engage in compulsions, and an increase in overall well-being.
Consultation Services:
Prior to our first meeting, I am available for a free, brief phone consultation to discuss what you are looking for and to determine if I am the appropriate person to help. In addition, I am available for brief consultation services for specific short-term issues. Please contact me if you think this is something in which you might be interested.
Specific Perinatal Mental Health Services:
Individual Therapy:
Perinatal mental health issues, including fertility issues, mental health issues during pregnancy and birth, and postpartum mental health issues can be incredibly isolating. Even though many people experience these issues, often they do not feel comfortable talking about it. I provide a safe space for people to work through these issues in a confidential, empathic way. I am certified in perinatal mental health and have been trained in specific trauma treatment, and look forward to helping you on your path toward healing. Perinatal mental health issues do not only affect women or mothers. They can affect women, men, mothers, fathers, partners, grandparents, siblings, birth parents, adoptive parents, gestational carriers - anyone. Individual therapy can be short or long term depending on the issues with which you are struggling, and typically is done on a weekly basis.
Couples Therapy:
Perinatal mental health issues can be incredibly taxing on a relationship. Regardless of whether one person or both people in a relationship are experiencing perinatal mental health issues, the strain this can put on a relationship frequently serves to exacerbate the problem. If you feel that your relationship is being affected by your or your partner's perinatal mental health issues, I am available for couples therapy to address this.
Group Therapy:
Group therapy can be a powerful medium for people to connect, especially around perinatal mental health issues. It can be helpful to hear what other people are going through and connect through common experiences and feelings. Periodically, I hold support groups for perinatal mental health issues. Please let me know if this is something in which you might be interested.
Speaking Engagements:
I am happy to speak on a variety of topics. I strongly believe that most people are not aware of the prevalence of perinatal mental health issues. I believe that part of my responsibility in working with this population is spreading the word about the need for diagnosis and treatment for everyone affected by infertility, pregnancy, birth trauma, and postpartum issues. In addition, I have extensive experience in college counseling and working with college-aged students, and am available for speaking engagements on college mental health and the transition to college. I am available to speak on a number of other topics as well.
